The technology of aging in place

There’s a new breed of caregiver these days. One who is not only responsible for herself, but also her children and her aging parents. This is the sandwich generation and it’s not an easy position to be in. Especially when the elderly wish to “age in place,” retaining the same level of independence they’ve had for decades.

According to the National Library of Medicine, the preference of older adults to “age in place,” or to live independently at home, rather than in an assisted living facility, is widely recognized [1,2,3,4].

But as it turns out, this preference has greater implications than we might imagine.

Individuals who develop disabilities and are no longer able to age in place are likely to be institutionalized in assisted living facilities. These declines, which can occur with advanced age, are key barriers to one’s ability to maintain an independent lifestyle [5,6]. This often leads to more significant mental and physical decline, as well as quality of life decline and increased cost of care, compared to older adults who continue to live independently [7].

The care technology and personal emergency response systems have largely been slow to evolve. But the little advancements that have happened touch the lives of so many in such meaningful ways, offering seniors the potential for something remarkable: complete independence.

Technologies, such as internet of things (IoT), Ambient/Active Assisted Living (AAL) robots and other artificial intelligence (AI), have been shown to have great potential in fostering independent living, improving mental and physical health, and increasing quality of life [8,9,10,11]. At the same time, they can also reduce caregiver burden, which can lead to more targeted and better quality care [12].

Absent powerful tools for caregiving, caregivers are merely holding their breaths, hoping they can avoid a potential crisis. Elders know they need to be vigilant—after all, they were the caregivers once, too. Even young people who are looking to be their best. We’re all taking careful steps in this ever-changing world in which we live.

Enter LogicMark. Simply put, we’re in the business of protecting the personal experience of living life to the fullest by designing innovative medical alert systems for seniors with no monthly fees (ever!) And we do that with technologies that can ease some of the pressures on the growing population of sandwiched caregivers.

To the uninitiated, that device may look like just a small, plastic box on a lanyard, but to those who use it on a daily basis, it’s so much more. The ability to activate a medical alert that calls family directly is one that allows for a new level of independence.

For safety inside and outside of the home, the GuardianAlert911+ pendant is a two-way communication button. Connecting you directly with 911 operators in the event of an emergency and providing the confidence to live independently. 4G LTE technology maintains coverage within range of cellular network towers.
